Not This Time. But The Bigger Fight Isn’t Over
A major development proposal in Hillsborough County is denied, showing how resident voices can shape growth decisions.
A proposed development in Hillsborough County that would have transformed more than 300 acres into a large residential and commercial project has been denied by county commissioners.

The plan required changes to long-standing land use rules to expand development into a more rural area near Odessa. In the end, commissioners chose not to move forward.
What made the difference was turnout.
Residents showed up in force, raising concerns about preserving the area’s character and whether infrastructure like roads and schools could handle the added growth. This time, those voices were heard.
For communities like Wesley Chapel, it’s a reminder of what’s at stake. Growth isn’t slowing down. New projects and rezoning requests will continue to come forward.
This decision doesn’t stop development. It just stops this version of it.
Developers can revise plans and return, and often do. What this moment shows is that when residents stay engaged and show up, they can influence how growth takes shape.
Because the real question isn’t whether the area will grow.
It’s who helps decide how.
The Real What’s Up

When disaster hits, the HelpNow Project steps in. This Florida-based nonprofit focuses on both rapid disaster response and life-saving community training, with veteran-led teams deploying to the front lines after hurricanes and emergencies using a mobile command center equipped with medical supplies, communication tools, and off-grid power. But their work doesn’t start after the storm, it starts before it, through hands-on training in CPR, emergency response, and disaster preparedness to ensure everyday people are ready when it matters most, because in moments of crisis, preparation can make all the difference.

Rumor Has It…
The long-vacant TGI Fridays on Bruce B. Downs could be turning into The Ugly Dumpling, bringing a new concept to the area

For a while now, that empty TGI Fridays on Bruce B. Downs has just been… there. You’ve driven past it. Wondered what was going in. Maybe assumed it would sit a little longer, like a lot of places do after closing.
But rumor has it that might be changing. A sign has popped up suggesting the old Fridays location could be turning into something called The Ugly Dumpling, an Asian fusion concept centered around soup dumplings and bold flavors.
Nothing has been officially confirmed yet, but the signage and local chatter are starting to line up. And if it happens, it would be a shift from what people are used to seeing along Bruce B. Downs. Most of the dining options nearby are familiar and predictable. A spot focused on dumplings would stand out.
It also speaks to a bigger trend. As the area continues to grow, so does the demand for more variety. Not just more restaurants, but different ones. For now, it’s still in the rumor stage.
But if this one comes through, that empty building might finally have something cooking inside again.
