When I-75 Stops, So Does Wesley Chapel

One crash last Saturday brought I-75 to a standstill, highlighting the growing strain on Wesley Chapel's transportation network as the community continues to expand

If you were anywhere near I-75 last weekend, chances are you knew something was wrong long before you saw it.

Just before 10 a.m., a crash involving an oversized load shut down all northbound lanes after the rear trailer swung into an SUV during a lane change. The interstate remained closed for nearly two hours while emergency crews responded and removed the damaged vehicles. Remarkably, the two women inside the SUV suffered only minor injuries.

While the highway eventually reopened, the crash served as a reminder of something many Wesley Chapel residents experience on a regular basis.

It only takes one incident to bring one of Florida's fastest-growing communities to a standstill.

Over the past decade, Wesley Chapel has added thousands of new homes, businesses, restaurants, schools, and medical facilities. It's a sign of a thriving community, but it's also placed increasing pressure on a transportation network that relies heavily on one interstate to move residents, workers, and visitors through the area.

When I-75 is flowing, it's easy to forget just how much we depend on it. But when a major crash forces the highway to close, traffic quickly spills onto local roads, commute times grow, and a routine Saturday morning can suddenly become a frustrating wait behind miles of brake lights.

The good news is that everyone involved in last Saturday's crash is expected to recover.

The bigger takeaway is that as Wesley Chapel continues to grow, so does the importance of investing in transportation infrastructure that can keep pace. Because right now, one unexpected incident is often all it takes to remind us just how connected this community has become to a single stretch of highway.

A planned $70 million indoor field house at MOSI could transform the University Area into a regional destination for youth sports and events

For years, when people thought about MOSI, they thought about field trips.

In the future, they may also think about basketball tournaments, volleyball championships, and weekends packed with thousands of visiting families.

Hillsborough County is moving forward with plans for a $70 million indoor field house on the MOSI campus, a project that would add a 178,000-square-foot multipurpose sports and event facility featuring 12 basketball courts that can convert into 24 volleyball courts. The venue is expected to host youth sports tournaments, community recreation programs, educational activities, and special events, with a targeted opening in 2028.

While the facility itself is impressive, the bigger story may be what it means for the surrounding area.

The field house is expected to become an anchor for the ongoing redevelopment of the MOSI campus, where plans also include future retail, restaurants, housing, and other mixed-use development. County officials believe building the venue alongside MOSI will not only save money by using existing infrastructure but also create a destination capable of attracting visitors from across Florida.

For residents in New Tampa and Temple Terrace, that could mean more than just another place to play sports. Large youth tournaments often bring thousands of athletes, parents, coaches, and spectators, creating new business for nearby hotels, restaurants, and local shops.

It's another sign that the University Area continues to evolve—not just as a place to live or attend college, but as a regional destination for sports, entertainment, and family activities.
