Giving Teens Somewhere Better To Be

A new summer initiative hopes to keep Tampa Bay teens busy, engaged, and out of trouble while school is out

Summer break is a wonderful thing. For about three days. Then parents start hearing the two words that have launched a thousand questionable decisions: "I'm bored."

That's part of the thinking behind the new Safe Summer Series 2026, a community initiative designed to give teens positive activities throughout the summer months while helping steer them away from trouble. Organizers recently kicked off the program in Tampa with plans for additional events throughout the summer. Activities include flag football tournaments, gaming competitions, creative arts programs, and other youth-focused events.

The effort comes as communities across the Tampa Bay region continue looking for ways to address so-called "teen takeovers" and other large gatherings organized through social media. Organizers say the goal isn't just preventing problems. It's giving teenagers safe places to spend their time and connect with their peers.

For families in Wesley Chapel, the message is one worth paying attention to.

As our community continues to grow, so does the number of teenagers looking for things to do when school lets out. Sports, clubs, volunteer opportunities, summer jobs, and community events all play a role in keeping young people engaged and connected.

Because sometimes keeping kids out of trouble isn't about telling them what not to do.

It's about giving them something better to do instead.

Not Everything Is Becoming A Neighborhood

Pasco County just completed the largest land preservation purchase in its history, protecting nearly 1,900 acres from future development

In a region where most growth stories begin with new homes, new roads, and new construction, here's one that starts with something staying exactly as it is.

Pasco County recently completed the largest land preservation project in its history, acquiring the 1,893-acre 4G Ranch property in Land O' Lakes for approximately $68 million. County officials announced the acquisition during a June 1 event at the property.

Located off State Road 52, the ranch will remain protected from future development and will serve as a key connection between the Conner Preserve and other conservation lands throughout eastern Pasco County. Officials say the acquisition helps preserve wildlife habitat, water resources, agricultural land, and open space in one of Florida's fastest-growing regions.

The purchase was funded jointly by Pasco County and the State of Florida, with each contributing roughly half of the $68 million cost. The property was acquired through Pasco's Environmental Lands Acquisition and Management Program, which has now preserved more than 8,600 acres since its creation.

What makes this story particularly interesting for Wesley Chapel and Land O' Lakes residents is what almost happened instead.

In 2023, proposals were being discussed that could have transformed portions of the ranch into thousands of homes and hundreds of thousands of square feet of commercial development. Instead, the land will remain a working ranch and conservation area.

For a community accustomed to seeing orange construction fences pop up on every vacant piece of land, this is one growth story that ended very differently.

Sometimes the biggest development news is what doesn't get developed.
